10 great ways to make extra money - boost your earning during the recession
With the credit crunch, recession and increasing oil prices, we are all struggling to keep food on our table. For this reason, I have researched widely to find 10 great ways to make extra money.
De-clutter and sell off your unwanted items
We all have old mobile phones that we no longer use that are cluttering up our homes and offices. Have you considered selling them to make a few bucks? You can make anything from £1 to £200 depending on your phone as well as help save the environment. Win, win. This is easy to do, simply go to Mopay, or Envirofone, or Fonebank, or Bananagreen.
2. Sell unwanted items.
You know the saying, "one man's junk is another man's treasure"? Well it is about time to take that saying literally, and sell off your unwanted items to those that would treasure them a bit more. You can sell all sorts of things.
Books/CD/DVD/Games – one of the best site for selling your books/CDs/DVDs/Games is Amazon. Its relatively easy to setup and you can reach tens of millions of customers for your item.
If you need your cash fast and could not afford to wait for a sale for your CDs/DVDs/Game, then visit Musicmagpie. This probably won’t give you the best rate but it tends to be faster.
Of course, there is Ebay for auctions. At Ebay, you can auction off your unwanted items; put a reserve on the items so that the items do not sell unless it achieves the minimum reserve price. Then keep your fingers crossed and hope it achieves a much higher price than you anticipated.
An alternative to selling could be to rent out items that you no longer use. The benefit of renting out your items as supposed to selling them is that you can rent them out over and over and over again.
Do you have a ball gown or sewing machine or power tools that you can rent out? Rentnotbuy could be the place for you. The downside of renting out your items is that it is not widely known so it could take a while for someone to rent your items but it’s worth keeping an eye out for this in the future.
3. Rent out your parking space
Have you considered renting out a parking space, driveway or garage that you are not using? At Parkatmyhouse, you can do exactly that. You can do this on a short term, whist you are waiting for your car to be fixed or on a more longer term basis. The amount you get depends on the area that the parking space is in and also the level of security but parking spaces in London go for around £200 per month.
4. Rent a spare room
Do you have a spare furnished room in your house? You can take in a lodger, as a way of earning extra dosh. The great thing about this; is that the first £4,250 you make in a year is tax free under the Government ‘rent a room’ scheme. In addition, you can also ask for deposit and rent is normally paid one month in advance –so it’s a great way to get access to cash quickly. Bear in mind that you will need to pay back the deposit to the lodger when he/she moves.
5. Rent your home out during sporting events
Do you live near a sporting event such as the Olympics, Wimbledon etc? If so, you could rent out your home during the 2-3 weeks of the sporting events for as much as 6 times the usual going rental rate for the area. Where do you stay whilst your home is rented out, I hear you ask? Well, at such a rate, you can afford to book a holiday to somewhere exotic for the 2-3 weeks and still have made a significant amount of money. If you really want to make lots of dough, you can always convince friends and family to let you stay at their place for the period.
The down side is that you will need to pack all personal items that are sentimental and store them. However, for the amount that you do make, it may well be worth it.
Make Money Online
6. Cashback shopping websites
When shopping online, cashback websites gives you between 2% to 15% of the cost of the item that you have purchased back. Why? These are advertising websites that are paid by the retailers for the online traffic that they bring to the retailers. So to entice you to go through them, the cashback websites offer you an incentive by splitting the advertising revenues from the retailers.
The retailers are genuine and sometimes top high street retailers such as Debenhams. If you are going to purchase the item anyway, why not do it through the cashback websites and get some of your money back.
Examples of the top cashback websites are Topcashback, Cashbackkings, and Quidco.
7. Get paid for reviews
You can get paid to review anything from music to books to holidays.
Review your favourite holiday and you could be considered for a £200 prize. Now isn’t that something? It’s worth taking your time, organising the review with lots of recommendations to be in with a chance of the £200. For more information, visit Simonseeks.
You can also earn from 5p to 25p per unsigned song you rate depending on your reputation on the site. Slicethepie.
8. Take part on online surveys
There are lots of online research companies who are willing to pay for you to take their surveys. Often, the amount that you get varies depending on the surveys and the company. In some cases, you will need to accumulate points. Once you have accumulated a certain level of points, you can usually convert the points into cash or vouchers.
You won’t become rich on them but they could provide a bit of pocket money. For detailed guide to completing online surveys, visit Moneysavingexpert.
9. Make money with blogs
Another great way to make money online is with a blog/website. The most successful way to earn money is by attracting lots of traffic to your blogs/website. Large volume of traffic gets the attention of the advertisers.
You can add affiliate links to your blog/website so that you earn some money each time someone clicks from your blog/website to the affiliated website. The easiest and most popular affiliates are Google ‘Adsense’ and Amazon ‘Associates’.
10. Sell your photos
Are you a budding photographer? You could sell your collection of digital photos through an online agency by uploading your photos to the agencies website. For each photo sold, you will earn royalties. Try Fotolia, Istockphoto, or Photobox.
I hope these help. I will be trying out some of the suggestions above and blogging about them in the coming weeks. I am alreaddy doing some of them but not all.
