Two police officers arrested for withholding vital evidence in Stephen Lawrence inquiry
A retired police constable 62 and a serving member of Metropolitan police staff 53 were arrested last Thursday on suspicion of withholding vital evidence about the racist killing of Stephen Lawrence 16 years ago. The undisclosed evidence was allegedly found at the scene of his 1993 murder, but were concealed by two Met police workers.
The arrest came after 2 months investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) which resulted in the arrested men’s home being swooped. They are suspected of withholding information from all three major inquires into Stephen’s death; the 1993 original Lawrence murder inquiry, the 1997 Kent inquiry that looked at the Metropolitan police failings in investigating Stephen’s murder and the 1999 Macpherson inquiry which found Scotland Yard officers were institutionally racist.
Dr Richard Stone who sat on the Macpherson inquiry commented on the arrest and said
"We were being told that no one was coming forward with information about who was responsible but there was no such wall of silence. There was a large amount of information that the police were either not processing or were suppressing. [...] We felt there was a strong smell of corruption. Mrs. Lawrence has to face the fact that maybe there was corruption and her son's killers are still free."
Other people close to the Lawrence family and the investigations have also commented that the public had told the Lawrence family that they gave police evidence which were either never produced or were suppressed.
The promising Stephen Lawrence who was 18 at time of his death was killed in April 1993 by a gang of white youths at a bus stop in Eltham. The killers have never been brought to justice even though Luke Knight, David Norris, Gary Dobson, and brothers Neil and Jamie Acourt had been provided to the police as suspects in tip-offs.
I hope that for the good of the nation, justice, Stephen’s family but most of all Stephen’s mother Doreen Lawrence, the investigation into his murder is reopened and those responsible are brought to justice. I also hope that the alleged corrupt officers are shown the full force of justice. Maybe, just maybe, Stephen’s mother will see her son’s killers in jail in her lifetime.

The British Press knew they were guilty, the British public knew they were guilty, it was brutally obvious to all. But the British "Justice" System decided that justice would not be served here, and they decided that this poor black man's life was expendable. Questions must be raised as to how this evidence was ABLE to be concealed in this way. Where were the checks and balances that should have come into place to prevent "individual" officers from perverting the course of justice? Or are the Metroploitan police going to finally admit to widescale police corruption and abject racism across the board from top to bottom?
Lets wait and see whether this is just another false alarm.
So far NO evidence of corruption and even Sir Ian Blair now says the inquiry was somewhat inefficient but not racist.
Richard Stone is a nasty piece of work.
